Saida Karoli (born April 4, 1976) is a renowned Tanzanian traditional singer and performer from Bukoba, known for her "natural" style, mesmerizing vocals, and hits like "Maria Salome". Rising to fame in the early 2000s, she popularized the Haya-influenced folk music genre across East Africa, earning nicknames like "Wanchekecha" and performing at major events like Zanzibar's Sauti Za Busara. Early Life and Career Birthplace: Born in Rwongwe, a village in the Bukoba Rural district of the Kagera Region, near Lake Victoria. Background: Raised in a traditional setting where she learned music from her mother, despite initial local disapproval of girls singing. Education: Due to lack of support, she only completed primary school up to grade 5. Breakthrough: She started her professional career in 2001 with her debut album, Chambua kama Karanga. Musical Style and Success Style: Known for natural vocals, rhythmic, and traditional music often sung in her native Haya language, alongside Swahili.
