Kampala, Uganda: 9, January
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has advised teachers across the country to look beyond their monthly salaries and invest in side businesses as a way of improving their livelihoods.
Speaking to teachers in Kyenjojo District, Tayebwa said the current economic realities make it difficult for salaried workers to rely solely on their pay. He encouraged educators to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset and take advantage of the many income-generating opportunities available in Uganda.
According to Tayebwa, teachers should not wait for salary increments alone but instead use their time and skills to engage in productive ventures that can supplement
their income. He noted that government is aware of the challenges facing teachers and has plans to gradually improve their pay, but personal initiative remains key.
The Deputy Speaker also revealed plans to organize capacity-building and mindset-change trainings for teachers after the elections, aimed at equipping them with knowledge on entrepreneurship and financial management.
He further encouraged teachers to form and strengthen SACCOs and associations, saying collective saving and investment can help them access capital and grow financially. As a show of support, Tayebwa made a financial contribution to the local teachers’ SACCO and pledged equipment to help boost their income-generating activities.
Tayebwa emphasized that improving teachers’ welfare requires both government effort and individual initiative, urging educators to be proactive in securing a better future for themselves and their families.
