Iryn Namubiru (born December 13, 1981) is a celebrated Ugandan vocalist, songwriter, and performer known for Afro-pop and R&B hits like "Nkuweeki" and "Begombeko". Rising from the group I-Jay to international prominence, she is a multi-award-winning artist (PAM Awards, Diva Awards) and founder of the GATHER FOR CHILDREN NGO. Early Life and Education Born in the Central Region of Uganda. Attended Bugema Adventist Senior Secondary School, Namasagali College, and Airways Tourism & Hotel Institute. Met fellow artist Juliana Kanyomozi at Namasagali College. Music Career I-Jay: Formed a group with Juliana Kanyomozi in 1999, releasing music before moving to France. Nujeli: Formed this group in France with Julien Grout. Solo Career: Achieved widespread success in 2006 with the album Nkuweeki?. Hits: Known for "Y'ono", "Lwaki", "Bonna Obasinga", "Begombeko", and "Birowoozo". Style: Known for her light-lyric, alto-voiced vocal style. Awards and Recognition PAM Awards: Best Female Artist (2006, 2010, 2011), Best R&B Song (2006, 2011), Best Album (2011). Diva Awards: Artist of the Year (2010). Other: Best Female Artist (Buzz Magazine 2007). Personal Life and Philanthropy Resides in Dijon, France, and is fluent in Luganda, French, and English. She was married to Frenchman Frank Galusy Morel, with whom she has two sons. Founded the NGO "Gather for Children" in 2006 to support vulnerable children and mothers. Survived a fatal Lake Victoria boat accident in 2018. Shared personal experiences regarding family struggles, including a long separation from her mother.
